Your Choice: Wait for Labor or Labor Induction

By Partner to Decide

The Partner to Decide decision aid on routine induction of labor (induction without a medical reason like hypertension or pre-eclampsia) is an evidence-based decision aid is written at a middle school reading level and is available in many languages. There is a web version and a paper/PDF version. These resources are free to use and print. High quality color copies and laminated versions for clinical or community use can also be ordered for a fee on the Partner to Decide website. The original paper version was developed and tested at Boston Medical Center in partnership with obstetricians, family medicine doctors, midwives, and nurse practitioners and with feedback from pregnant patients who used the tool and who were majority people of color with Medicaid insurance. Results of the initial development and testing are published in the peer-reviewed academic journal Birth. The decision aid achieves shared decision-making from the patient perspective and increases the quality and consistency of counseling from the provider perspective. Using the decision aid for routine induction of labor helps providers achieve shared decision-making on this topic, in alignment with current guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and from the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM).
